Dr. Derek Vogelpohl is ready to take on the role as business owner as well as being an optometrist. He and business partner Tony Menke opened Clear View Vision Center in early August at the corner of 10th Street and Avenue H, in the same complex as Team Staffing, Inc.

The building was formerly a couple of restaurants and before that, the longstanding Bentler Rental business, but it sat unused for a few years before developer Dustin Ilmberger bought the properties and cleaned them up; he then waited for prospective tenants to come calling. Team Staffing Solutions Inc. moved into the south half in January, and Clear View Vision Center is preparing the north half of the building for its use.

In fact, that was a prime reason for Vogelpohl to set up shop there.

“It was essentially a blank slate for us to design the way we wanted to,” Vogelpohl said.

Menke drew up the floor plan, tweaked it and together their creation is gradually coming together.

“We’re using all local vendors” in the construction, Menke said.

Until recently, Vogelpohl was an optometrist at an area eye care clinic, and Menke also worked for the company.

“I was at the point professionally” Vogelpohl said, “where there were certain aspects of running an optometry practice that I wanted to have control over. I wanted to have more influence.”

He said that he and Menke looked at other places, but this spot had easy access for his patients, a good location right next to downtown and of course the chance to design their own office.

“That made this an obvious choice,” Vogelpohl said.

Vogelpohl has begun accepting patients — his number is 316-6016 — and he will offer the gamut of optometry care: eye exams glasses and medical eye emergencies.

He said he will accept Iowa Medicaid. “I want to provide care as many insurance portals as we can,” he said.

His office hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. He wanted to be open later on Monday and earlier on Friday to accommodate those whose work schedules make it difficult to make appointments.

Vogelpohl is originally from Pittsfield, Ill., and after doing his undergraduate work at the University of Illinois in Champaign, he went to the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago where he graduated in 2013.

Menke is a West Point native and attended the former Marquette Catholic High School.
